Weißt Du schon, wo Du nach Deinem Bachelor- oder Master-Abschluss arbeiten willst? Oder bist Du Dir noch unsicher, ob Du besser in einem Großkonzern oder einem Start-up am besten aufgehoben bist? Wir haben für Dich ein paar Pro- und Contra-Argumente zusammengesammelt und geben Dir hilfreiche Tipps, welche Charaktere sich in welcher Unternehmensart am wohlsten fühlen.

Im Moment kannst Du Dir angesichts der Arbeitsmarksituation als erfolgreicher Studienabsolvent Deinen späteren Arbeitgeber noch ganz in Ruhe aussuchen – sowohl global agierende Konzerne als auch innovative Start-ups suchen händeringend nach motiviertem und fähigem Nachwuchs. Dies trifft vor allem auf die Bereiche IT und Ingenieurswesen zu. Für wen Du Dich dann letztendlich entscheidest, hängt von zahlreichen Faktoren ab – und nicht zuletzt auch von Deinen persönlichen Bedürfnissen. Nachfolgend wollen wir Dir die unserer Meinung nach relevantesten Entscheidungskriterien auflisten.

Arbeitsklima – Start-up vs. Konzern

In dieser Vergleichs-Kategorie findet man üblicherweise die meisten Stereotype bzw. Vorurteile – aber schlussendlich dann auch die dazugehörigen Wahrheiten. Tatsächlich herrscht in Start-ups eine wesentlich lockere Atmosphäre, Krawatten sind verpönt, man duzt sich mit Praktikant und CEO gleichermaßen, auch die mittlerweile sprichwörtlichen Kickertische, Obstkörbe und kostenlose Getränke- und Snackautomaten gehören immer noch zum Standard-Inventar. Wenn überhaupt, herrschen sehr flache Hierarchien, schnelle Kommunikations- und Entscheidungswege vereinfachen die interne und externe Abstimmung, das Arbeiten im Home-Office stellt ebenfalls selten ein Problem dar (auch weil oft international verteilte Teams zusammenarbeiten müssen). Zudem kannst Du Dir nicht selten auch Deine Arbeits-Hardware selbst aussuchen oder im Rahmen von “Bring-Your-Own-Device”-Vereinbarungen einfach Deinen eigenen, vertrauten Computer nutzen.

Da viele Start-ups aufgrund ihres Pioniercharakters erst für sich funktionierende Prozesse entwickeln und ausprobieren müssen, kannst Du Dich in vielen Bereichen von Anfang an mit einbringen und musst keine Standard-Routinen nach dem Motto „weil wir das immer schon so gemacht haben” übernehmen. Diesen augenscheinlich positiven Eigenschaften stehen aber auch ein paar negative Aspekte gegenüber. Dein Verantwortungsbereich stellt sich in einem Start-up unabhängig von Deinem eigentlichen Spezialgebiet üblicherweise eher breitgefächerter dar. Auch aufgrund der Tatsache, dass die Personaldecke am Anfang eher deutlich dünner ausfällt und anfallende Aufgaben dann einfach an die Mitarbeiter verteilt werden, die “schon da sind”. Weiterhin arbeitest Du erfahrungsgemäß in einem echten Start-up länger und unter höherem Zeit- und Erfolgsdruck. Wichtige Meilensteine müssen einfach “On-Time” erreicht werden, um die sehr kritischen Kapitalgeber bei Laune zu halten und die weitere Entwicklung nicht zu gefährden. Da viele Start-ups sich auf komplett unbekanntem Terrain bewegen, wird man auf allen Ebenen auch mit zahlreichen und entsprechend unvorhersehbaren Problemen und Hindernissen konfrontiert, die dann zügig und restlos aus dem Weg geräumt werden müssen. Hier ist dementsprechend echtes Improvisationstalent sowie psychische und physische Belastbarkeit gefragt. Auch sollte man sich abends nicht viel vornehmen und damit rechnen, auch am Wochenende “angeklingelt” zu werden, wenn wieder mal “Not am Mann” ist.

In den Konzernen triffst Du andererseits meist sehr etablierte Strukturen an, die sich üblicherweise schon seit Jahren oder Jahrzehnten bewährt haben. Dein typischer Arbeitstag zeichnet sich dann eher durch Regelmäßigkeit, Berechenbarkeit und der Möglichkeit aus, bei Fragen und Unsicherheiten schnell kompetenten Rat bei erfahrenen Kollegen einholen zu können. Konzerne verfügen in der Regel auch über umfangreiche Sozialleistungen und einen Betriebsrat, der darauf achtet, dass die Gesundheits- und Sicherheits-Vorschriften penibel eingehalten werden. Eigene Betriebssportgruppen, Sporteinrichtungen (etliche Großkonzerne unterhalten in ihren Bürohochhäusern Schwimmbäder, Saunen und/oder Fitness-Studios) oder zumindest Ermäßigungen bei Gyms oder anderen Anbietern sind ebenfalls nicht zu verachten.

Dagegen gibt es bei Firmen, die schon seit etlichen Jahrzehnten oder sogar Jahrhunderten am Markt sind, natürlich auch ein paar Negativ-Argumente. Die Hierarchien sind nicht selten sehr komplex, wichtige Entscheidungen verzögern sich aufgrund der vielen “Zwischen-Verantwortlichen”, die ihre Zustimmung geben müssen. Anzüge inkl. Krawatten werden in einigen Branchen selbst bei Temperaturen verlangt, die im Urlaub nur mit T-Shirts, Shorts und Flip-Flops ertragen werden können. Dabei kommt es überhaupt nicht darauf an, ob Du im direkten Kundenkontakt stehst oder nicht. Viele Prozesse und Produkte werden zudem nicht mal mehr ansatzweise hinterfragt – eben auch weil sie schon “seit Ewigkeiten” existieren. Innovationen werden erfahrungsgemäß sehr kritisch aufgenommen, müssen etliche Widerstände überwinden und können sich oft erst dann richtig etablieren, wenn die nächste Iterationsstufe eigentlich schon längst vor der Tür steht. Neben dem Arbeitsklima sollten Dich aber auch die Möglichkeiten interessieren, dazuzulernen und weiterzukommen.

Was bietet Dir die besten Lern- und Karrieremöglichkeiten

Obwohl Du bei einem Start-up gerade in der Anfangsphase oft auch viele fachfremde Aufgaben übernehmen und erledigen musst, steht dort aber eher der Spezialist im Vordergrund. Auch wirst Du während Deines weiteren Verbleibs eher nicht viele verschiedene Abteilungen und Standorte kennenlernen können – einfach, weil diese noch nicht existieren. Dafür lernst du im Start-up, wie Du schnell und einigermaßen zufriedenstellend “Kühe vom Eis” holst, Deine Fehlertoleranz wächst, ein eventuell vorhandener Perfektionismus wird sich aufgrund Deiner Alltagserfahrungen in Wohlgefallen auflösen und du lernst das ständige Verlassen Deiner Komfortzone.

In Konzernen hingegen kannst Du mit ein wenig Glück zum Globetrotter werden – nicht wenige multinationale Unternehmen unterhalten wirklich auf jedem Kontinent zahlreiche Niederlassungen oder besitzen hervorragende Verbindungen zu ortsansässigen Partnern. Die dazugehörigen und sehr anspruchsvollen Management-Trainee-Programme erfordern dann auch längere Aufenthalte im Ausland, das Beherrschen und/oder Erlernen von Fremdsprachen und Einfühlungsvermögen in andere Kulturen oder Wertschöpfungsketten.

Du suchst nach Work-Life-Balance?

Aus den vorherigen Punkten ergibt sich dann auch das entsprechende Verständnis eines ausgeglichenen Verhältnisses von Privat- und Arbeitsleben. Im Start-up arbeitest Du im Notfall immer wieder mal rund um die Uhr, musst ständig erreichbar sein und verbringst daher nicht selten auch Deine spärlich gesäte Freizeit mit Deinen Kollegen. Dafür gestaltet sich der Umgang entspannter und nicht selten abwechslungsreicher.

Im Konzern kannst Du davon ausgehen, dass Du nur in Ausnahmefällen Überstunden machen musst (und dann nur im gesetzlich erlaubten Rahmen). Im Gegenzug gestaltet sich Dein Arbeitstag eher unspektakulärer und wird nicht selten von festen Prozessen und Ritualen geprägt. Start-ups sind – ganz grob gesprochen – daher eher was für ungebundene und spontane Menschen, die sich selber verwirklichen wollen und kein Problem damit haben, viel und lange zu arbeiten. Im Konzern fühlen sich hingegen Menschen wohl, die geregelte Rahmenbedingungen bevorzugen, ihre Freizeit besonders wertschätzen und vielleicht gerade eine Familie gründen wollen. Nicht zu verachten sind natürlich auch die Verdienstmöglichkeiten, die im Großunternehmen üblicherweise besser ausgeprägt sind – und oft auch zusätzliche Boni beinhalten. Start-ups halten dann eher mit dem Renommee dagegen …

Wo es Dich nun hinzieht, hängt aber nach wie vor von Deiner Intuition ab. Inzwischen unterhalten einige Konzerne auch interne Start-ups oder Beteiligungen an innovativen Jungunternehmen. Hier vereint sich dann vielleicht das Beste der beiden Welten – und bereitet den Boden für Deinen absoluten Traumjob!
